PAN V 2008 will be the fifth such student conference in the Projek Amanat Negara series to be held and organised by the United Kingdom & Eire Council for Malaysian Students (UKEC). The immediate preceding conference in April 2007 saw as many as 150 students attending and drew speakers such as Dato’ Dr. Munir Majid (Chairman, Malaysia Airlines) and Professor Emeritus Dato’ Dr. Khoo Kay Kim (prominent Malaysian historian) who touched on various issues pertaining to Malaysia.
As a student organisation spanning the United Kingdom and Ireland, UKEC has always prided itself in being a vehicle for student movement, believing that the educated young ones now have the potential to be the wise leaders of tomorrow. We recognise that university students are at the point where they are able to internalise complex ideas and concepts which will shape their view of the world, as well as being at crossroads where they will make decisions that will shape their lives.
It is on this note that the UKEC believes Projek Amanat Negara V 2008 will be an excellent platform to advance such an agenda. We believe an open and honest discussion of the many issues that Malaysians face is warranted – from employment to Corporate Malaysia, from national unity to national leadership. We earnestly hope this conference will be a double-edged sword, that it will not only expose students to different perspectives brought to them first-hand by eminent speakers from Malaysia, but also be a platform for them to voice out and discuss these issues amongst their peers, hence contributing immensely to the process of maturity of the students through real awareness of national issues. Such a conscious understanding of these issues will empower them to ensure the continuity of the nation’s development.
The success of last year’s Projek Amanat Negara student conference led UKEC to organise the 1st Annual Malaysian Student Leaders’ Summit (MSLS) at Nikko Hotel, Kuala Lumpur in August 2007. Clichéd as it may be, we truly believe that this year’s PAN V 2008 will be the next in line to continue empowering students to be future leaders of Malaysia.
